Our Voter Guide for the 2022 Election

This November 8, 2022 election is critical for determining the fate of the City of Cupertino and our schools. Cupertino For All enthusiastically endorses four candidates who will work to create an affordable, livable, and thriving Cupertino: JR Fruen, Sheila Mohan, Ava Chiao, and Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto. Cupertino for All is a progressive coalition made up of longtime residents, displaced residents, students, parents, homeowners, renters, and our allies — with the commonly shared belief that we can and should create a more sustainable Cupertino for future generations.

We enthusiastically endorse JR Fruen for Cupertino City Council. He is a respected community leader, lawyer, and entrepreneur. He has relevant experience and a vision to create a more sustainable, inclusive future for all residents of Cupertino. He knows Cupertino because he grew up here, and has participated in local advocacy through organizations like the CUSD Citizens Advisory Committee, South Bay Chinese Club, and Cupertino for All (that's us! 😄). We appreciate JR's dedication in advocacy for youth, affordable housing options, accessible transit, and collaboration with other communities in our region. He is the leader we need right now to counter the toxic work environment in City Hall today. It's never been more important to vote in your local election!

Vote for JR Fruen
(#8 on the ballot)

Sheila Mohan’s experience in finance and local government, along with campaign priorities of increasing transit and housing access, make her a great candidate for Cupertino City Council. At a time when the City is experiencing difficulties in governance from costly lawsuits to basic operations, Sheila’s experience as a Senior Finance Manager Director, and an Administrative Services Director, provide crucial expertise for our city. In addition, we appreciate her focus on creating housing and transit opportunities for many members of our community, like teachers and seniors.

(#7 on the ballot)

Cupertino union school district

Ava Chiao is a teacher, providing a unique perspective to the school board. Her 19 years of teaching experience, dedication to student well-being, maintaining finance stability, and educational excellence would do well in a district facing tough choices on school closure, attrition to private schools, and long-standing student well-being issues. While being the only candidate with teaching experience offers a compelling reason for endorsement alone, her policy experience through the California Teachers Association (CTA) State Council and National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly provides even more reason to elect Ava to the Cupertino Union School District Board of Education.

Vote for Ava Chiao
(#1 on the ballot)

Fremont Union High School District

Currently President of the Fremont High School Board of Trustees, we support re-electing Naomi to continue her work on behalf of our students in the diverse set of schools FUHSD represents. Her experience in the non-profit space and various community organizations is impressive; moreover, her measured approach reflects not only her time on the job, but also the thoughtful perspective she brings to complex issues like students’ mental health and equity in educational outcomes. We appreciate her recognition of the detrimental role the housing crisis plays in school enrollment and staffing, and look forward to seeing her partner with local governments to build communities where our schools can thrive.

Vote for Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto
(#3 on the ballot)
